Tui Na
Tui Na translates as “pushing, grasping” and is a form of Chinese, medical body work. The style of Tui Na used at Inner Spring Acupuncture and Wellness is Zheng Gu Tui Na; taught by Jen Resnick, who studied under the developers of the practice, Frank Butler and Tom Bisio. “Zheng Gu” translates as “correct bone,” and its’ unique mobilization techniques may restore normal functioning and structurally re-integrate the body.
This style of tui na was studied in a 5 part series; created with a specific set of Qi Gong exercises accompanying each set of techniques. The Qi Gong exercises were designed to assist in developing hand strength, coordination, body mechanics, and the practitioner’s sensitivity and internal connectiveness. The exercises, specifically chosen or developed for the techniques employed, are what make this therapy so effective. Many beginners of this therapy are amazed at their efficacy even when used with minimal experience. This training also includes various Qi Gong, exercise, and stretching techniques that can be given to patients to assist them with their own healing.
The most commonly used techniques will include pushing along the tissue, pressing, pulling, and kneading. The techniques are designed to move the muscles and tissues in a way that facilitate blood and fluid movement through those tissues. The Zheng Gu Tui Na program was designed to allow flexibility and adaptation to accommodate specific patient needs. Tui Na is another often overlooked therapeutic method. When employed correctly, it alone can serve as a powerful treatment method. Used in conjunction with acupuncture and moxa, it can take treatment and results to a higher level.
Benefits
It relaxes the body’s musculature and while also moving blood and fluid through the muscles and surrounding tissues. It also generates movement of qi through the channels.
Uses
It is primarily used in conditions of pain and/or channel stagnations. It can also be used to loosen up stiff muscles and tissues prior to an acupuncture treatment to facilitate better movement through the channels after needle insertion. In some cases, tui na may be used by itself to assist with healing musculoskeletal issues.
